Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Medford OR
142 PM PDT Tue Apr 8 2025
.DISCUSSION (Today through Monday)...
Overview:
A very seasonal spring-like forecast will be underway with rounds of
disturbances pushing through PacNW which will result in cloudy days
with light precipitation followed by warm-ups and nice weather. We
will essentially flip between these scenarios through at least this
weekend. Looking at seasonable temperatures through this stretch
with the "coldest" day Sunday morning where we could see some
isolated areas of freezing temperatures on the westside (teens and
20s for the eastside). For the most part, not seeing any noteworthy
impacts other than the chance of freezing temperatures as snow
levels will be high which will eliminate the chance for
accumulation.
Further Details:
Water vapor imagery shows a steady stream of moisture from the
Pacific within zonal flow. This fetch of moisture is resulting in
light precipitation and cloudy sky conditions across the forecast
area. Not expecting a lot of rainfall with these showers, but these
chances will continue through this evening mainly north and west of
the Umpqua Divide.
We will transition to ridging in upper levels tomorrow which will
result in a couple nice days Wednesday and Thursday before another
disturbance impacts the region on Thursday. This front Thursday will
bring another round of light precipitation, and wind speeds Thursday
afternoon (depending on frontal timing) could be on the breezy side
for our typical windy spots on the eastside. We are looking at two
vorticity maxes which with this next round. The first shortwave
pushes inland Thursday, and there will be another vort max on the
heels of this first one resulting in rainfall chances continuing
through Friday and into Saturday morning. Again, not expecting a lot
of rainfall, and snowfall levels will be high that accumulation is
not a concern. We will see another ridge build in on Sunday and
continue into Monday before the next system comes through the
region. This fits the overall thinking here of on/off systems during
this typical spring like pattern. Backyard gardeners and those with
agricultural interest may want to follow the forecast closely this
time of year when we get freeze/frost impacts, especially in areas
where we haven`t hit our normal last freeze date. Sunday morning is
the day to watch for westside areas.

.AVIATION (18Z TAFs)...
Ceilings are generally VFR across northern California and
southern Oregon this morning. An approaching front is forecast to
bring showers to coastal areas and Douglas County later this
morning and into tonight. Coastal areas will see the most rainfall
from this front, but in general flight levels will stay at VFR or
MVFR. Gusty winds will develop along the Oregon coast and over
areas east of the Cascades this morning, but will ease later
tonight. The probability continues decreasing past ~7AM for MVFR
conditions at the coast, so looking to have increased ceilings to
VFR by tomorrow morning.

.MARINE...Updated 200 PM Tuesday, April 8th...The front is
passing over the land this afternoon with steep seas through
this evening for all waters.
Alternating activity and stability remain in the forecast for area
waters. Seas look to improve to below advisory conditions on
Wednesday and Thursday, with another front on Thursday evening
possibly rebuilding unsettled conditions in area waters. Seas
improve again on Friday through Saturday morning, with a thermal
trough possibly developing late Saturday and remaining into Sunday.
Guidance suggests that long term wave heights are not expected to
exceed 12 feet, indicating that these future events may not be
spectacular.
